 Dishwasher detergent and prolonged exposure to moisture can strip away this layer and make the pan more likely to rust.

Clean cast iron with warm water and a brush or nonabrasive sponge. A small amount of modern dish soap is usually fine on well-seasoned cast iron.

Dry the pan thoroughly and apply a very thin layer of oil if needed.

Avoid soaking it for long periods.
