A MOTHER AND HER SON

The boy’s name was Daniel.

He lived with his mother in a small apartment where, for weeks, everything had been getting worse.

His mother had lost her job after becoming ill.

The bills kept piling up.

The refrigerator was almost empty.

Daniel did whatever small jobs he could find.

He washed cars.

Carried boxes.

Cleaned garages.

Anything that could earn him a little money.

That morning, he had planned to work.

But when he woke up, he found his mother too weak to get out of bed.

She asked him to stay with her.

So he did.

But by noon, there was still nothing to eat.

Daniel searched the cupboards.

Nothing.

He checked the refrigerator.

Almost nothing.

He took the few coins he had and went outside looking for help.

He asked for work.

No one had anything.

He asked for food.

Some people told him they couldn’t help.

As the hours passed, Daniel became more desperate.

Eventually, he walked into the grocery store.

He looked at the bread.

Then at the cheese.

He thought about his mother.

And he took them.

“Why didn’t you simply ask the store owner?” the judge asked.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I was afraid he would say no.”

“You had already asked other people for help?”

“Yes, sir.”

“And nobody helped you?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I tried all morning.”

The judge looked down at the case file.

Then he looked around the courtroom.

He no longer saw only a teenager accused of stealing.

He saw a child who had been trying to protect the only person he had left.

Finally, the judge picked up his gavel.

Everyone expected him to announce the punishment.

But instead, the judge said:

“Stealing is still wrong.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then the judge continued:

“But today, we also have to ask ourselves how we allowed a child to reach this point.”

The courtroom fell silent.

The judge looked at everyone around him.

“Because no child should ever have to choose between following the law and feeding his sick mother.”

Then the judge announced a decision that nobody expected.

And that decision would involve everyone in the courtroom…
