My mom texted on my wedding day that they were skipping my “mistake,” but when I saw their family beach photo in Maui, I simply replied, “Check your bank apps,” wiping out their funds and watching my dad come pounding on my door a week later.

The  wedding march was supposed to begin in five minutes when my phone buzzed inside my bouquet with a message that turned my blood cold.

It was from my mother.

I looked down, and the words struck like a physical blow:
