According to a statement from Orlando Police Department spokesperson Autumn Jones, officers were investigating a robbery reported just 10 minutes before the incident. The victim had described the suspects as Black men with darker skin tones riding bicycles. Jones further stated that the officers drew their weapons because the suspects allegedly told the victim they were armed.

Jones clarified, “The men were stopped near the location of the robbery as part of the investigative process to determine their involvement in the incident.”
Officers needed to confirm whether they were responsible for the crime.” The victim was later brought to the scene and verified that the two cyclists were not involved in the robbery.

After facing public scrutiny, the Orlando Police Department released body camera footage showing an officer apologizing to the detained men. “I’m sorry this happened, but you matched the description, which is why I acted the way I did,” the officer said.

One of the men replied, “An apology doesn’t make up for pointing a gun at me.”
