By the time the vehicle was discovered, a 15-year-old boy was dead.

For Hernández’s family, July 4 will no longer be remembered simply as Independence Day. It will also be the date their son, grandson, brother and friend died.
For Tranquillity High School, it will be the date a student who should have been preparing for another year of classes was instead being mourned.
And for investigators, it remains a case in which one crucial question has yet to be fully answered: what caused the vehicle to leave the road?

Luis Alonzo Hernández was 15.
He was a Tranquillity High School student.
He was driving a Toyota Corolla on James Road in Fresno County.
The vehicle failed to negotiate a curve near Lincoln Avenue and entered a canal.
A passerby discovered the submerged vehicle on the morning of July 4.
Rescuers recovered the vehicle, and Hernández was found dead inside.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
Those facts tell the story of a young life lost suddenly.
