I thought the worst part of that grocery trip would be watching a stranger humiliate my 83-year-old mother for taking too long at the checkout. Then the cashier looked at Mom’s face, went pale, locked her register, and called for a box she’d been keeping in the back office for seven months.
My 83-year-old mother still insisted on doing her own grocery shopping.
That Saturday, the store was packed.
Mom had only six items, but when it was her turn to pay, she struggled to find her wallet.
The woman behind us sighed loudly.

“If you’re too old to handle shopping, maybe stay home.”
